Broner drops Taylor late, barely escapes with a decision

Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (29-1, 22 KOs) scored a 12-round unanimous decision over Emmanuel Taylor (18-3, 12 KOs) in front of over 8,000 spectators at the US Bank Arena in Cincinatti, Ohio on Saturday evening. The final scores from the judges were 115-112, 116-111, and 116-111.

The fight was so tight that any round could have been scored in favor of either fighter. Although Broner quite clearly took the third and fourth rounds, the 10-1 underdog Taylor responded by taking control of rounds five and six where he pushed and battered Broner to the ropes. Broner received a warning for excessive use of elbows in desperately trying to ward off Taylor’s onslaught.

In the 10th round, Broner suffered a cut over his right eye due to an accidental head clash. Taylor continued charging in the 10th and 11th round. He was doing good in the 12th until he got caught by the hard left hook that sealed the win for Broner.

Broner said he wants Lucas Matthysse as his next opponent. In all honestly, his fight against Taylor could have gone either way if it wasn’t for that knockdown. The way Broner fought tonight, he wouldn’t last long against the Argentinian knockout artist. He would lose more badly than the way he lost to Marcos Maidana.
