Undefeated boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) threatens to fire his father Floyd Sr after the latter made some comments about the possibility of a megafight happening between Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) and his son. Floyd Sr believes that the fight will happen, and should happen for the sake of the sport of boxing.
“Man, I’m pretty sure that if don’t nothing else happen, I’m pretty sure he’s gonna get Pacquiao… it’s gonna happen. That fight’s gonna happen. Trust me. That fight’s definitely gonna happen. It’s a fight for the world, man, that fight’s gonna happen. I’m gonna tell you right now, never told me the fight’s gonna happen, but I’m gonna tell you, the fight’s gonna happen,” a broken-record-sounding Floyd Sr said.
Upon hearing of his father’s statement, Floyd Jr got upset and was quick to contradict it. I really don’t see any reason why Floyd Jr can be so disappointed with his father who simply wants his son to step up and prove to the world that he’s the best fighter today. Rebutting his own father’s words shows how much Floyd hates the idea of fighting Pacquiao. Floyd Jr can’t seem to do or say anything right when he hears Pacquiao’s name.
“Well my father is totally wrong. Like I said before, we have people constantly being removed from the Mayweather Promotions team, Team Mayweather, and we also have people being removed from the Money Team. I want my dad to be with my team, but if he continues to go out there and speak on things that he has no knowledge about without communicating with me, then I must get a new trainer. I’m just saying, when Pacquiao was sleeping, everybody was like, ‘You all crazy for trying to make that Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.’ You know what’s so crazy? I just look at the situation like this, ever since Ariza left Pacquiao, he hasn’t had a knockout. What a coincidence!”
The above statement sounds very wrong to me. Floyd seems to be insinuating that Alex Ariza gave Pacquiao special formula to be at the top. He must have forgotten that Alex Ariza is on his team now. Floyd continues to believe that he doesn’t need to fight Pacquiao to prove himself because he has an undefeated record. Well Floyd, to most boxing fans, undefeated don’t mean anything. That feat has been accomplished by several fighters including Rocky Marciano and Joe Calzaghe.
An undefeated record doesn’t really equate to greatness if you haven’t fought the best available challenge. Let’s not forget that Floyd ducked real opponents in their prime. Fighters that Floyd avoided included Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, undefeated Miguel Cotto, and prime Shane Mosley. He has also been avoiding Manny Pacquiao like a deadly plague for more than 5 years now.
